Tech overview

  • Podcaster's Portal has an editorial focus, not a technical one
  • However, it's essential to at least have a technical knowledge of the equipment required for podcast production

Podcasters Portal is more about content than the technical side of podcasting.  But we can’t ignore technical issues altogether.

It’s a bit like a driver and mechanic.  Really, a driver needs to know how to change a flat tire and check the oil.

But not how to conduct a tune-up or wheel alignment.  That’s for the mechanics and engineers.

The same goes with podcasting.  We’re not going to tell you much about the engine.  But enough to turn it on and use it to get from a to b.

There are other great sites on the Web that will go into loads of detail about the technicalities, and we’re going to let them do that for you.

In the “Technical Stuff” section of this website, you’ll find some articles on technical issues to give you a basic understanding.  The topics include:

  • Audio – what is it?
  • File formats
  • Microphones – which ones and how do you use them to sound good?
  • Editing software, and
  • Recording on location.
